  1. What is a Lubricant?

  • The most important element in your engines performance.
  • It provides greasiness to the engines which minimizes wear ant tear.
  • It acts as a cooling agent.
  • It washes away the deposits and residues.

6. Are two different brands of oils with the same viscosity grade and API rating really the same oil?

NO. Motor oil brands can differ in many respects. Base oil formulations can differ widely, any motor oil can contain up to 20% additives and since additives vary in quality from manufacturer to manufacturer motor oil is not necessarily motor oil as they say buyer beware.

7. Does altitude have any effect on the performance of motor oil? Because I live in a high altitude area, should I use a particular type of oil?

Lubrication requirements are not affected by altitude. A more important consideration for your area is ambient temperature. As always it's a good idea to consult your owner's manual or your local service station for specific recommendations on your car.

8. How often should I change my engine oil?

3 Months or 5000 Kilometers. Oil is the life blood of an engine but in giving your engine life the oil slowly sacrifices its effectiveness. While the oil itself does not wear out its critical additives do. Motor oil also suspends deposits harmlessly but no oil can do so forever. Therefore the first thing to do is to consult your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for oil and oil filter change intervals. One easy and safe reminder is to change your oil and oil filter every three months or 5000 kilometers.

9. Is there any real difference between other competitor’s motor oils? Is it just the additives, or is there a difference in the manufacturing.

There are differences in competitor’s motor oils, mainly in the additive packages each uses. Every bottle of motor oil is roughly 80 percent base stock 20 percent additives. The type and amount of additives are determined by the strength of the base stock used. Some base stock require more viscosity index improvers than another, others need more pour-point depressants to meet specifications set by the American Petroleum Institute. The best motor oils to buy are the big name brands that do not require as many additives, such as Valvoline

10. What driving conditions most severely test engine oil?

Short trips with many stops and starts are very hard on motor oils. When cars are not driven for more than 20 kilometers at a time the starting and stopping creates fuel dilution and condensation which can cause the additives in the motor oil to break down more quickly than in extended driving operations.

11. What is meant by the terms “grade”, “viscosity”, & “w”?

“VISCOSITY” is a term that refers to the oils ability to flow. “GRADE” is a measure of viscosity. The higher the grade number, the higher the viscosity and thus the oils resistance to flow. For example 30 grade oil flows more readily than 40 grade oil at the same temperature. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) rates oil by viscosity grades. An SAE rating such as SAE 30 can be found on the bottle. “W” is often misinterpreted. Many people believe the “W” used in SAE multigrade oil ratings means “Weight” in fact the “W” means winter

12. What is the difference between single & multigrade engine oils?

A single grade oil such as SAE 30 has certain temperature limitations. In very cold weather it will not flow. Even so there are many engines that need a single grade oil check your owner's manual. Multigrade oil can be used across a wide range of temperatures because multigrade contains additives called viscosity improvers. SAE 15W/40 oil is a multigrade for example the “15W” indicates the oil viscosity at low temperatures the “W” meaning “winter”. The lower the number in the front of the “W” the greater the oils ability to flow at low temperatures. The “40” indicates the oil viscosity at normal engine operating temperatures. Most engines use multigrade oils.

13. Why is motor oil important?

Motor oil is the life blood of an automobile. It reduces friction by forming a lubricant layer between moving surfaces. It seals the tiny gaps between the pistons rings and cylinder walls and it cools the moving parts by dispersing heat from the engine. Motor oil also cleans surfaces, holds foreign deposits in suspension and prevents corrosion due to chemical changes during engine operation.

14. How can a person know which brand of oil is best for their car? The owner of a repair shop where I took my car for several years suggested that engines last longer if you use a conventional oil and change it often, than if you use a synthetic motor oil.

The best way to choose a motor oil is to pick one manufactured by a reputable oil company like Valvoline that has been around the market for decades and has a proven product. In fact Valvoline is the oldest trade name in the petroleum industry. Your engine will last a long time with synthetic, synthetic blend or conventional oils if you stick to a routine oil change interval. The difference between synthetic and conventional oil is that synthetic products offer better fuel economy, engine protection and an increase in horsepower. All very good reasons to consider switching.
